Secrets of the Sun è un album discografico del 1965, inciso nel 1962 dal musicista jazz Sun Ra e dalla sua Solar Arkestra.
Il disco
L'album è considerato uno dei più accessibili del periodo "Solar".[3][4] Originariamente pubblicato su etichetta El Saturn Records nel 1965, il disco andò presto fuori catalogo e rimase introvabile per anni fino alla ristampa in formato compact disc da parte della Atavistic nel 2008.
«Segnando una transizione nel suo sviluppo tra lo swing avanzato delle prime registrazioni dell'era di Chicago e la maggiore sperimentazione in forma libera della sua permanenza a New York, questo album rivela anche le prime versioni registrate di due standard di Ra, Friendly Galaxy e Love in Outer Space. Accessibile, ma proseguendo in un territorio d'avanguardia, questo album evidenzia un periodo fertile nella storia dell'Arkestra. Incremento della sperimentazione free-form
L'album è caratterizzato da una sperimentazione gioiosa. Solar Symbols, un duetto percussivo, utilizza tecniche di riverbero anticipatrici della musica ambient.[5] Solar Differentials include una "voce spaziale" sperimentale:
«Solar Differentials introduce Art Jenkins, un nuovo "cantante spaziale". Jenkins aveva chiesto un'audizione con Sun Ra pochi mesi prima della registrazione e aveva cantato per lui alcune melodie ritmiche e blues. Sonny gli disse che aveva una bella voce, ma quello che stava cercando era un cantante che potesse fare l'impossibile ("Il possibile è stato tentato e fallito, ora voglio provare l'impossibile"). Art tornò un giorno mentre stavano registrando al Choreographer's Workshop, e deciso a entrare nel disco in qualche modo, rovistò in una borsa di strumenti vari alla ricerca di qualcosa che potesse suonare. Ma ogni volta che raccoglieva qualcosa, qualcuno nella band gli diceva di lasciar perdere. Quando nessuno si oppose dopo che aveva tirato fuori un corno di montone dal fondo della borsa e iniziò a cantarci dentro, ma al contrario, con la bocca verso l'apertura grande, in modo che emettesse un suono strano che egli rese ancora più strano muovendo la mano sopra la piccola apertura per alterare il tono. Sonny scoppiò a ridere: "Ora è impossibile!" e gli chiese di improvvisare senza parole sul disco.»

Quando fu ristampato in CD, al disco fu aggiunta l'improvvisazione free jazz Flight to Mars, della durata di diciassette minuti.
Registrazione
Registrato interamente al Choreographer's Workshop di New York nel 1962 con Tommy Hunter.[6] Nella stessa sessione si presume che siano state prodotte alcune canzoni poi pubblicate negli album The Invisible Shield e What's New?, due dischi della Saturn pubblicati una decina di anni dopo.[6]
