Maze game es una descripción de género de videojuegos utilizada por primera vez por los periodistas en la década de 1980 para describir cualquier juego en el que todo el campo de juego sea un laberinto. Se requiere una acción rápida del jugador para escapar de los monstruos, superar a un oponente o navegar por el laberinto dentro de un límite de tiempo. Después del lanzamiento de Pac-Man de Namco en 1980, muchos juegos de laberintos siguieron sus convenciones de completar un nivel atravesando todos los caminos y una forma de cambiar temporalmente las mesas de los perseguidores.

Maze chase games

Este género es ejemplificado por Pac-Man  (1980), donde el objetivo es recoger puntos y evitar a los enemigos que persiguen al jugador. Pac-Man generó muchas secuelas y clones. En Japón, a menudo se les llama "juegos de comer puntos".

Juegos de captura de cuadrícula

En los juegos de captura de cuadrícula, también llamados juegos de colorear líneas, el laberinto consiste en líneas, y el objetivo es capturar áreas rectangulares atravesando sus perímetros. La jugabilidad no es fundamentalmente diferente a Pac-Man (los jugadores aún tienen que navegar por todo el laberinto para completar un nivel) pero suficientes juegos han usado el motivo de la cuadrícula como para ser un estilo distinto. Un elemento único es que es posible capturar múltiples rectángulos simultáneamente, generalmente para puntos extra. Amidar estableció el modelo para este subgénero.
